Severe Shot Advantage Gives Women's Soccer a Sunday Shutout Win

Sharks outshoot Johnson & Wales 34-0 and win by three

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University women's soccer team waited out a delayed start but still posted another defensive gem, not allowing Johnson & Wales a single solitary shot in a 3-0 win Sunday night at the NSU Soccer Complex.

After a one-hour weather delay, the Sharks (5-2-0) moved ahead just nine minutes into the contest, when senior Tori Vives (Cooper City, Fla.) placed a precise corner kick into the box, allowing teammate Cydney Niedermeyer (Jr., Fort Myers, Fla.) to outleap everyone for a true header and a 1-0 lead.

NSU blanked their visitors to the south 14-0 at the break on shot attempts and took all four corner kicks to that point. Jordan Lentz (So., Fort Myers, Fla.) played the first 45 minutes in goal and would eventually earn the win.

Getting the home team's second goal was Julia Nytorp (Sr., Örnsköldsvik, Sweden), showing persistence to corral a rebound in the 54th minute. In a series of three breakneck Shark shots, Nytorp was just wide of the goal on the first, finding the right post instead. It ricocheted to Khirah Madison (Fr., Burleson, Texas), whose putback was deflected on a sprawled dive by Wildcats' keeper Jenna Boersma, but right back to the right foot of Nytorp, who ripped it into the back of the net.

The Sharks kept on the offensive, and it paid off with the cherry on top with just 2:25 remaining. Lianna Malawski (Fr., Chapel Hill, N.C.) came up with the first goal of her career, a line drive from about 25 yards out for the final margin and the second win in as many nights for NSU.

Behind Lentz, freshmen Fatima DiModica (Naples, Fla.) and Olivia Post (Evanston, Ill.) pretty well split the time in net for NSU in the second half, though they like Lentz did not face a shot. In all, 24 Sharks made it into the contest, with 14 taking at least one shot.

All told, the Shark shot advantage was 34-0. Pacing the team were Nytorp and Carley Montgomery (So., Sanford, Fla.) with five each, while Malawski had four and Kelley Johnson (Fr., Issaquah, Wash.) and Samantha Rommel (Sr., Gelsing, Germany) had three apiece. Montgomery and Malawski placed three on goal each to tie for the team lead, while Johnson had two.

The Sharks will have technically their second out-of-conference match in a row on Wednesday, against Sunshine State Conference provisional member Embry-Riddle. First kick will be at 7 p.m. from Daytona Beach.
